What comes first, the chicken or the egg?
I see it all the time, people wanting to start a business, but they don’t consider an overall business strategy.
They want to make a lot of money, but they don’t have a strategy to make it happen.
There’s more to starting a business than just a dream, passion, business cards, and a website. While these things are needed, the most important thing to consider is your overall business strategy.
By definition, strategy is a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim. Your overall business strategy will include multiple strategies in different areas to help you meet your overall goals.
Just to mention a few, you should consider the following strategies for your business; business launch or growth strategies, client attraction strategies, sales and marketing strategies, income generating strategies, and yes, even an exit strategy.
One of the main reasons you need an overall business strategy is you need to have your destination in mind before you start the journey.
So, a great place to start creating your overall business strategy is at the end. When all is said and done, what do you want your business to look like? Start with the end in mind.
If you were planning a road trip from Tennessee to New York, you must have a specific address to enter into your GPS as your destination. Otherwise, you will end up anywhere in New York. If you were trying to visit a friend, you may never make it there without a complete strategic plan which includes the destination.
Take some time to write out a clear vision for your business. You don’t have to know all the steps or pieces required to make this vision a reality, but you must start with a vision. Write out all the steps and pieces you know and then do the research to fill in all the spaces that are unfamiliar to you.
Whatever you do, don’t start without a clear vision and an overall business strategy. Wanting to make a lot of money is not a strategy. You must have a strategy to make a lot of money.
