Being a Life Coach can be rewarding and fulfilling. However, trying to serve everyone can absolutely kill your profits.
Many life coaches are afraid to do the most important thing that can ensure their success. They fight it nail and tooth! I know because I did the same thing when I started my coaching business.
Here’s what it looks like…
- You spend large amounts of time creating program after program trying to make sure you have something to serve every potential client that lands on your website.
- You struggle with pricing, trying to make sure you have every price point covered.
- You struggle with charging your value. Again, trying to serve every potential client at the level they are willing or able to pay.
All of this can be solved with one simple strategy…defining your niche, target audience, and ideal client. You may have heard all these names before; they are all related.
Starting with your niche. This is a segment of a larger market that can be defined by its own unique needs, preferences, or identity that makes it different from the market at large. For example, within the market of women there are many different segments or niches. Married women would be a niche, as would divorced women, single Moms, and female nurses. These are all niches within the larger market for women.
Then there’s your target audience. A target audience is a group of people identified as being likely customers of a business. Target audiences share similar demographic traits including, but not limited to, age, gender, location, etc.
And lastly, your ideal client. Your ideal client ties both the behavior and demographics together. Identifying who this is from the beginning will save you tons of time going in circles trying to be all things to all people. And not to mention, helps you avoid killing your profits.
One of the most common mistakes new coaches and even some established coaches make with their marketing strategy is trying to market to a broad audience. This can cost you hundreds if not thousands of dollars in advertising. This is often what happens when you hear people say Facebook ads don’t work – they tried to advertise to an audience that was not defined or narrow enough, and it killed their profits quickly.
So, before you start down the path of advertising and promoting your coaching business, get clear on who you want to serve. This is one of the areas I teach my clients in our From Overwhelm to Profits™ coaching program. Not only do I help you get clear on who your ideal clients are, I also help you understand the best way to serve them with your expert solutions to their most pressing problems.
