Every year it’s the same thing. You get excited about your dreams and you set goals to turn them into reality. You have high hopes. But by early summer your accomplishments aren’t where you thought they would be. And you’re wondering what happened.
Here are five things that can kill your dreams…
#1 – This one is obvious…Not having a plan or goals to achieve anything.
So many coaches and people in general just go through life thinking that success will just fall into their laps. They dislike planning and setting goals so they just wing it every day. When you don’t plan to succeed, you’re planning to fail.
#2 – Expecting overnight success.
Watching the success of others sometimes causes us to have a false sense of reality. We think the road to success is easy and if we just do what someone else did it will happen for us quickly. This is definitely not the case
When you see others at the top of their game, you must understand that they spent years of hard work, dedication, and commitment to build their dreams. Fred Smith the founder of Fed-Ex said it best, “It took me 29 years to become an overnight success.”
#3 – Not wanting to “DO THE WORK”.
It amazes me how many times I encounter coaches who have an amazing gift to help others but they just don’t want to do the work required to position themselves to serve.
Let me tell you this with all honesty – you can’t buy success!
#4 – Believing someone else has the answers for you.
I’ve been guilty of this one. I used to think the answers I needed to build my coaching business was going to come from others. Because of this I would always seek the advice of others. And let me tell you, there’s plenty of people ready to give advice. Sometimes the advice was not the best for me.
I learned that my best answers are within me already. Les Brown says, “FAITH is Finding Answers In The Heart.” I know this to be true.
#5 –Believing it’s someone else’s fault.
Your vision is your duty and yours alone. Too many times we blame our failure on everything and everyone else. I’ve done this before too. We say things like, I don’t have enough money to start my business, I don’t have enough experience or talent, no one is buying what I have, and I don’t have the support I need.
But if success doesn’t come, you have only yourself to blame. Accept this truth.
The great Les Brown said…
“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.”
Don’t allow this to happen to you.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Are any of these dream killers present in my life? If so, which ones?
- What has it cost me?
- What will it cost me if I keep on doing it?
In order to live your dreams you must start with goals. If you don’t have your goals written down with expected completion dates – you’re just wishing and hoping for success and the opportunity to live your dreams.
Get serious about your dreams. Write out your goals for the next 6 months and make a plan to achieve those goals – No Matter What!
