Emails are the “jam” for marketing — especially for coaching businesses. When done well, this strategy can build your credibility, gain trust with potential clients, and bring qualified traffic to your buy button.
But, for many new coaches and even a few established coaches, putting together a good email system can feel like pulling out your teeth. A few common reasons why putting together an email system that helps produce sales is tough are:
- you are absolutely clueless about the tech,
- you don’t know what to write about in your emails
- you don’t know how to put the pieces together.
It really doesn’t have to be such a huge pain.
In this article, I will share four easy steps to put your automated email sales system together and you can do it in a weekend.

STEP 1. GET AN EMAIL MARKETING SERVICE
There are several email marketing services out there. The pricing can range from free to over $1,000 a month. If you’re just starting your coaching business, you can start with the paid version of MailChimp, Aweber, or Constant Contact. I recommend MailChimp. I used it for years in my business and it was easy to teach myself how to use it.
Check them all out and use their free trial to test them out before you commit to one. The cost for their standard paid version will range from $15 – $20 a month.
The benefit of using an email marketing service is it offers automation and provides a repository to collect email addresses and build your email list. This will save you time and frustration if you’re trying to send out emails to your list manually.
STEP 2. CREATE A FREE OFFER – OPT-IN
A free offer (or opt-in as it’s sometimes called) is just as it states, an offer that you give away for free in exchange for your audience’s name and email address.
The best free offer is something that helps your ideal clients gain a quick win to solve a problem, challenge, or obstacle. I suggest pulling out a topic from your signature coaching program and create a free offer around that. This should not only provide a quick win for your ideal client but should also give them a taste of your expertise.
STEP 3. WRITE AN EMAIL FOLLOW-UP SERIES
An email follow-up series is simply a set of emails that are sent to new subscribers after they sign up for your free offer (opt-in). I recommend 5 – 7 emails, scheduled to go out from your email marketing service – one a day.
In these emails you can provide additional value by teaching further on a topic, ideally taking your new subscribers on a journey to your desired destination – a consultation call, a paid membership, or a coaching program.
For content ideas, look back over your most popular blog posts and products. Posts can be repurposed to provide valuable content to your subscribers.
In addition, think about the questions you’re most frequently asked, what conversations pop up again and again, and what your social connections and competitors are discussing. These nuggets are the building blocks of a compelling email series that your readers will not only look for but actually read. And if they’re reading, they will eventually buy.

STEP 4. CONNECT THE PIECES AND AUTOMATE
Don’t let this step scare you. I know tech can be a beast for some but when you know the exact pieces to put together it can make this task easier. The planner I mentioned in step three will help to lessen the tech pain if you follow the steps explained in the planner. Or you can ask for help. I always suggest hiring the pros if it’s something that’s outside of your lane of expertise.
